In reality, it involves something far more important: a framework of regulations, health testing and years of work that influences whether a puppy will be healthy, well balanced and true to the breed standard. As a Japanese Spitz kennel registered with the Polish Kennel Club (ZKwP), Poland’s member organisation of the FCI, we want to show you what responsible, registered breeding looks like from the inside, how it differs from indiscriminate breeding and what you should consider before choosing a dog.

What Does “Pedigree Dog” Actually Mean?

A pedigree dog is one that conforms to its breed standard, reliably passes its characteristics on to its offspring and has documented ancestry in the form of a pedigree. Appearance alone is not enough: without documents confirming its ancestry, a dog is not formally recognised as a pedigree dog, even if it looks like a textbook example of the breed.

This brings us to an important fact that many people do not know: in Poland, the only organisation authorised to issue pedigrees recognised throughout the FCI is the Polish Kennel Club (ZKwP). Documents issued by other clubs or associations are not recognised within the FCI system. This is the first means of distinguishing registered breeders from sellers offering so-called “pedigrees” that carry no recognition within that system.

Breeding under ZKwP and FCI Regulations – What Does It Mean in Practice?

A kennel registered with ZKwP is a non-commercial breeding establishment whose purpose is the continual improvement of the breed: producing puppies that come as close as possible to the breed standard in terms of conformation, temperament, working ability and health. It is not production; it is long-term work.

Under the ZKwP Regulations for Pedigree Dog Breeding, which came into force on 1 March 2019 and are available at zkwp.pl, a breeder must be a member of the organisation, have a registered kennel name and own at least one bitch approved for breeding. Compliance is overseen by the breeding committee of the relevant ZKwP branch. In other words, breeders do not operate entirely on their own behalf; their breeding activities are subject to supervision.

Registration with ZKwP Is Essential, but It Is Not Everything

Karolina also serves on litter inspection committees, so her knowledge of rearing conditions, puppy health and welfare extends beyond the experience gained through our own kennel. This work has given us an even deeper understanding of the importance of raising puppies properly, caring for the dam and maintaining accurate documentation for every litter.
It is worth remembering that formal requirements vary between breeds. For some breeds, ZKwP requires additional health examinations, such as hip or elbow radiographs, or working trials. For others, certain examinations are not compulsory, but that does not mean they are not worth carrying out.
Registration with ZKwP and the FCI system is therefore an essential foundation, but it should not be the only criterion used when choosing a breeder. It confirms that the kennel is registered, the dogs’ ancestry is documented and the litter is subject to inspection. The next step is to determine whether the breeder conducts appropriate health testing, even when not every examination is formally required by the regulations.
In the Japanese Spitz, a responsible breeder should consider not only the dogs’ appearance and temperament, but also their health. Prospective owners should ask about patella assessments, hip examinations, eye and cardiac examinations, as well as genetic testing, including tests for PRA rcd4 and malignant hyperthermia.
For us, health testing is neither an optional extra nor a formality; it is an integral part of responsible breeding. No examination can guarantee that a dog will never become ill, but testing helps to reduce the risk of hereditary disease and enables breeders to make informed breeding decisions.
When choosing a puppy, it is therefore important to look beyond the pedigree itself. A pedigree matters, but the breeder’s approach to health, puppy rearing and the future of the breed is equally important.

Not Every Dog Is Approved for Breeding

This is one of the least-known yet most important facts: registering a dog with ZKwP does not automatically give its owner the right to breed from it. A dog or bitch must first meet the organisation’s breeding qualification requirements. These include:

being assessed three times at ZKwP shows after reaching 15 months of age;

a rating of “Excellent” for a male and at least “Very Good” for a female;

three assessments awarded by at least two different judges, including an assessment at an international, club or specialist show.

For many breeds, additional requirements also apply, such as radiographic screening for joint dysplasia or working trials. A male that fulfils all the conditions receives the official breeding qualification “PIES REPRODUKTOR” (“stud dog”) in its pedigree, while a female receives “SUKA HODOWLANA” (“breeding bitch”). A bitch may have one litter per year and must be at least 18 months old before giving birth to her first litter. In other words, behind every registered pedigree litter stands a pair of dogs that have genuinely met the relevant breeding requirements.

Registration Certificate, Pedigree and Kennel Name – Documents That Really Matter

A puppy’s first official document is its registration certificate, known in Poland as a metryka. It is an interim document valid within Poland and provides the basis for obtaining the dog’s full pedigree. It contains complete information about the dog, including its breed, registered name and kennel name, date of birth and coat colour, as well as the registered names and pedigree numbers of both parents.

A kennel name is the registered and protected name of a particular breeding establishment and may not be used by another kennel. Every pedigree dog carries its individual name together with its kennel name, rather like a person’s given name and surname. Our registered kennel name is Byakko Kitsune, and every puppy born in our kennel carries it. All puppies from the same litter are also given names beginning with the same letter. That is why our successive litters follow the letters of the alphabet, beginning with litter A.

It is worth remembering one simple rule: only dogs with recognised pedigrees can be shown and approved for pedigree breeding. If someone offers a “purebred dog without papers” at a reduced price, it is not a cheaper pedigree dog; it is a dog whose ancestry has not been officially documented.

Litter Inspection – Independent Oversight That Irresponsible Breeders Avoid

When the puppies are between six and twelve weeks old, the litter undergoes an official inspection. The committee checks the hygiene of the rearing environment, the puppies’ nutritional condition and health, and their conformity to the breed standard. Any irregularities are recorded in the inspection report. This is a form of independent oversight that irresponsible, unregistered breeders avoid by definition.

A puppy leaving a registered kennel should be vaccinated, treated for intestinal parasites, permanently identified by microchip or tattoo, and accompanied by its ZKwP registration certificate. The absence of any of these elements should be treated as a warning sign.

Irresponsible Breeding – What to Avoid

Irresponsible breeding operations are places where dogs are bred without proper oversight or health testing and often in appalling conditions, with profit as the primary objective. Puppies from such sources may be ill, unvaccinated, poorly nourished and deprived of essential early socialisation. The consequences – fearfulness, health problems and behavioural difficulties – can last a lifetime, while treatment may prove costly both financially and emotionally.

That is why people looking for a healthy pedigree puppy often find breeders through ZKwP. The breeder is only one part of a three-way relationship between the breeder, the puppy buyer and the Kennel Club. By issuing registration certificates and pedigrees, ZKwP provides independent confirmation that the litter has been registered and produced within its breeding system.

Responsible Breeding Is Not Simply Reproduction – It Requires Knowledge

The simplest approach is random mating, which most often produces puppies that are sound but otherwise unremarkable. Responsible breeding is different: it is based on an understanding of genetics, the ability to interpret pedigrees and the careful selection of breeding pairs. Breeders may use linebreeding or family breeding, but whenever related dogs are paired, they must remain alert to the point at which inbreeding depression can arise. Its effects may include a shorter lifespan, reduced fertility and smaller litters.

That is why a good breeder studies the ancestry of the dogs being considered for a mating instead of pairing them merely because “they look nice”. Every litter we plan is carefully considered. Our aim is not beauty alone, but healthy, well-balanced puppies that will become wonderful companions for many years.

Would you like to learn more about the breed itself?
